Washing Wheels (#231 of 365+)

Joni and Ken had invited two other couples over for a special backyard dinner by candlelight. Sometime during the evening, her wheelchair’s wheels became caked with mud after she rolled
over some wet grass. Later, before they all went inside, two of her guests stepped in without any prompting and scrubbed down her tires with hot water and a brush.

“After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him” (John 13:5)

They were honored guests but they were also Christians. Washing Joni’s wheels was like washing her feet. It was an eye-opener for her. How the disciples must have felt when the Lord Jesus got down on his hands and knees and scrubbed the day’s filth from their feet! Even though they protested he insisted on serving them in this way. It was humbling to watch their “Teacher” and “Master” Jesus bow down like a lowly servant.

Joni was humbled as she watched her guests get dirty while washing her muddy wheels. But they experienced the joy of the Spirit while demonstrating God’s love through this unexpected act of service… In what way can I serve someone this week that is totally unexpected and will demonstrate the love of my Savior?

Lord, you’ve often shown your love in surprising ways. Teach me to go down that narrow, less-traveled path, and love people in ways that most are either unwilling or unable to. May my actions bring glory and honor to your name. Amen.
