It Hurts So Good! (#232 of 365+)

Joni said in recent years she has been experiencing more and more pain due to her quadriplegia. To help with pain management, her physical therapist began pressing a rubber-
tipped tool deep in between the muscles around her shoulders. At first she dreaded those sessions with the instrument of “torture” but after time she started feeling the difference it made. The knifing pain subsided and she learned to appreciate how “good” pain can be when it comes from the hand of someone who knows what they’re doing.

“God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in his holiness. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it” (Hebrews 12:10-11)

When I have to endure emotional or physical suffering, or pain enters the life of someone close to me, I can rest in the knowledge that God has allowed it to happen for a reason. I might not understand at that time—I might even be bewildered by the situation— but as Joni said I can have “utter trust and confidence” in his character and wisdom. He has already proven a thousand times over that he loves me and he definitely knows what he’s doing. I just need to submit to his will and commit to staying on the path. The Lord will eventually work out everything for good.

“So then, those who suffer according to God’s will should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good” (1 Peter 4:19)

Father, you notice every detail of my life and you’re concerned with my every need. I can trust you to supply everything—even the very air I breathe. The indescribable peace and comfort from your Holy Spirit can soothe even the worst of human trials. You are so good to me! The next time I hurt, help me to run to you instead of away from you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
