Shine Like Stars (#225 of 365+)

“Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in
the universe” (Philippians 2:14-15)

In yesterday’s devotional verse the apostle Paul exhorted the Philippians believers to rejoice always no matter how difficult their situation became. He knew all the challenges they were facing yet in today’s verse he once again reinforces the same message: “Do everything without complaining or arguing.”

And he meant everything.

Notice how he didn’t say:
“Things are going to get better.”
“We’ll talk it out at the next church business meeting.”
“Don’t let outsiders hear you complain or argue from the pulpit.”

Paul told the believers to just do what they had to do without giving thought to their “rights” or what they wanted. His reasoning was the gospel of Christ took precedence over everything else on their agenda. When government officials and the citizens of Philippi witnessed those crazy Christ-followers continuing to live joyfully without complaint—in the midst of all their struggles and trials—they would want to know more about their Christ.

Previously in the chapter Paul wrote, “Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God… humbled himself and became obedient to death—even death on a cross!” (Philippians 2:4-6, 8)

Complaints and arguments would only quench the work of the Holy Spirit. If the power of Christ wasn’t visible in their lives… who would ever want to live like them and know more about the Lord?

Holy Spirit, make me more aware of the impact of my words on others and conform my attitude to the image of Christ. Amen.
