God Sees… God Knows (#210 of 365+)

“Do not curse the deaf or put a stumbling block in front of the blind, but fear your God. I am the LORD” (Leviticus 19:14)

What’s wrong with cursing a deaf person? If I call someone a bad
name, out of earshot so no one hears me, have I done anything bad? And what’s wrong with getting a good laugh at someone else’s expense as long as no one gets seriously injured?

In today’s devotional, Joni addresses those kinds of questions by taking a look at how God sees people who are at an economic or physical disadvantage. First, he loves them with a love that always wants to protect (1 Corinthians 13:7). He’s also willing to stand beside them and speak out as their “advocate” and “intercessor” (Job 16:19-20). If this is how the Lord feels about the deaf and blind—and all the rest of us—shouldn’t I do the same and work with him rather than working against him?

To me what God was saying in Leviticus was, “Maybe they can’t see or hear, but I can. I’m with you all the time. Show me some respect.”

“I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:40)

Lord, show me today how I can guard, protect, and speak out for someone who is at a disadvantage. Amen.
