The Bible Trunk (#110 of 365+)

When one reads our nation’s foundational documents including the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution, it’s obvious our founders lived by biblical principles. I would go a
step further and say most of them were believers in the Lord Jesus Christ. In today’s culture, however, making such a claim can incite anger and hatred because so many people refuse to acknowledge the Bible or Christianity had anything to do with the blessings we’ve enjoyed for over two hundred years.

“But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers” (Psalm 1:2-3)

In today’s devotional, Joni described the Bible as being like a thick tree trunk. All good things western culture has brought into the world (i.e. liberty, justice, rights, equality) are like branches growing out of the trunk. It’s ridiculous to ignore the basis of the principles that made America great or to separate ourselves from the Source of that wisdom. Joni mentioned the important work of modern-day philosophers and lecturers like Vishal Mangalwadi. According to www.vishalmangalwadi.com: “Vishal and [his wife] Ruth are currently in the United States exploring The Soul of Western Civilization - the Bible. This study was inspired by Vishal and Ruth's recognition of India's need for the reforming power of the Bible” (emphasis mine).

Countries that were once labeled “Third World” are now embracing biblical principles and the awesome power of God. It won’t be surprising to see them begin to experience an unprecedented period of economic wealth and spiritual growth… while the United States of America continues (in the words of Robert Bork) “slouching towards Gomorrah”…

Lord, the three branches of our nation’s government have fallen away from the Vine. Please graft them back in through the power of your Word and the influence of your Holy Spirit. May the Church learn to abide in you and obey the Great Commission. I pray all this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
