“As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water… And a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.’ Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil.
After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him and said, ‘If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.’” (Matthew 3:16 – 4:3)
Joni said it’s interesting how “No sooner had God the Father said, ‘This is my Son,’ than Satan countered with, ‘If you are the Son of God…’ Satan is still doing the same with us today.”
Jesus Christ set the perfect example of how to defeat the enemy. He used the sword of the Spirit (Ephesians 6:17) which is the Word of God. We can also successfully resist the temptation to “doubt, ignore, second-guess, belittle, rationalize away, or forget” what God has said once we’re completely familiar with the Bible and the full context of what God has truly said. And once his Word has been tucked away into our hearts it’s always ready to use at a moment’s notice—especially when we’re at our weakest point.
“Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee” (Psalm 119:11)
Lord, as the psalmist also said, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.” I know I would be stumbling through life if I didn’t have your Spirit and knowledge of your Word. May I never take Bible study and prayer time for granted! Amen.
