“We have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all the saints—the faith and love that spring from the hope that is stored up for you in heaven” (Colossians 1:4-5)
Joni said she received a gift from the mother of a disabled child—a pair of red dancing shoes. Since she’s a quadriplegic it was only meant to be a symbol of her hope in Christ. As the prophet said, “Strengthen the feeble hands, steady the knees that give way; say to those with fearful hearts, ‘Be strong, do not fear; your God will come…’ Then will the eyes of the blind be opened and the ears of the deaf unstopped. Then will the lame leap like a deer” (Isaiah 35:3-6)
The Lord will be true to his promise. One day soon Jesus will return and we who are weak and shaky will become strong and steady at last. I’m not speaking just about physical disabilities. Every one of us are afflicted by this fallen world in different ways—some emotionally, some psychologically, etc—and we all need healing. Jesus knows that better than anyone and he will complete the total redemption of our bodies, minds, and spirits in the blink of an eye.
“Listen, I tell you a mystery… We will all be changed—in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet… For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality” (1 Corinthians 15:51, 53)
Lord, one day (hopefully soon) your children will sing, shout, and dance before you with grateful hearts. I know when the time comes you will set to right everything that is wrong in this world, and you’ll replace our pain- and disease-stricken minds and bodies with new sanctified temples. In the meanwhile, thank you for the presence of your Holy Spirit and for giving us hope that keeps the flame of faith and love alive and burning in our hearts. Amen.
