A Religion for Losers (#165 of 365+)

Years ago media mogul Ted Turner called Christianity a “religion for losers”… and boy, was he right!

“And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father
or mother or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first” (Matthew 19:29-30)

Christianity isn’t a religion for winners, overachievers, or spotlight gluttons. It’s for those who know they’re nothing apart from God. Even with that in mind I still struggle to set aside my pride, my earthly possessions, my position, and my plans. What’s with the “my… myMY” all the time!? By the power of the Holy Spirit I want to overcome this selfishness…

“Whoever tries to keep his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it” (Luke 17:33)

In today’s devotional Joni encouraged me to humble myself and “lose” everything—just shake it off!—but she cautioned to never lose heart (2 Corinthians 4:16; Hebrews 12:5) because when I give everything over to the Lord he will honor it by giving me “a hundred times more” of everything that really matters.

Lord, help me not to be ensnared by that same old temptation to gain, gain, gain… You’re my only real treasure. May I lose myself today for your glory. Amen.
