Stay on Course (#252 of 365+)

“Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it’” (Isaiah 30:21)

For thousands of years sailors have maintained a bearing on the open seas by using the horizon and celestial objects like the sun, moon, planets, and stars. Ancient Polynesian seafarers didn’t even have to use sextants to measure distances and angles; they passed down their secret skills through song.

I have zero sailing experience. If I was lost out there on the ocean I would probably first try to determine which way east, west, north, and south was by the position of the sun in the sky and the approximate time of day. Then I would try to remember my last known position on the map, and in which direction I had been travelling and for how long. Once I could make an estimated guess of my location on the map, I would decide which direction I should swim or row to get to the nearest land mass. But there would be one big problem with my plan: It wouldn’t take into consideration the impact of the current and the wind. I could drift hundreds of miles off course without even realizing it.

The circumstances of life are like wind and waves, and Joni said they can cause me to get a little “disoriented.” I might feel like I’m making good decisions when I’m actually being tossed around every which way and headed in a “dangerous” direction. They best way to stray off course is to rely on my best guess or gut feelings. If I really care about “God’s purpose and plans” for my life then I will seek the Lord’s wise counsel and study the Bible. Then no matter the depth of the ocean or the distance from shore I will know exactly where I am. Right in the middle of God’s will for me...

“He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. About the fourth watch of the night he went out to them, walking on the lake… He spoke to them and said, ‘Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid.’ Then he climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down. They were completely amazed” (Mark 6:48, 50-51)

Lord, give me your peace in the midst of difficult circumstances. I can find my bearings only when I look to You. Amen.
